My biggest struggle when I started building online products was: “OK, but who is gonna pay me?”

Yes, I have various skills. Correct, I have a bunch of experience. Yep, I have tons of ideas. True, I can build MVPs.

But who is gonna pay?

How am I going to turn my knowledge/experience/skill into something that has potential in the market? Something that’s gonna make people open their wallets? Something they can use?

Let’s be honest, without receiving that internet dollar, one can’t find much motivation to go on.

If that sounds like you and you feel lost, here’s a simple strategy to begin.

Start helping people online with nothing to receive in return.

This might look like:

  • Commenting on Twitter/X

  • Posting comments on HackerNews

  • Answering questions on Reddit, Quora

  • Replying to people in private communities

The goal is to have your knowledge go through this transformation:

Useful → Usable → Used

And this is how you:

Build a reputation from scratch by displaying your knowledge.

A reputation:

  1. Attracts customers

  2. Reveals you problems you can solve

  3. Give you an edge against competitors

Believe it or not, this is how a lot of online entrepreneurs you look up to today got started.

Use a name and a profile picture that’s consistent across platforms so that people in a niche can recognize you.
